Welcome to Fortuna Union High School District

At Fortuna Union High School District (FUHSD), we’re proud to serve a diverse and close-knit community nestled in the heart of the Eel River Valley. Our district spans more than 2,500 square miles, from the northern tip of the South Jetty of Humboldt Bay, east along Highway 36 to the ridges near Ruth Lake, and south along the Avenue of the Giants to Redcrest. Although our region is vast, our mission is straightforward: to provide an environment of opportunity that encourages excellence, promotes community, and supports all students to maximize their potential.

Our communities are as varied as the landscape — from rural mountains to bustling small towns. Residents bring a wide range of experiences, backgrounds, and goals, creating a dynamic environment where students learn the value of both individuality and unity.

The City of Fortuna continues to grow, with new housing, businesses, and infrastructure improving opportunities for families. While the timber and agriculture industries continue to evolve, new opportunities in retail, healthcare, and hospitality are emerging. We recognize that many families face financial challenges — nearly half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price meals — and we remain deeply committed to supporting every learner’s academic and personal success.

Fortuna is home to two school districts and a Charter school: Fortuna Union High School District (FUHSD), Fortuna Elementary School District (FESD), and Redwood Prep Charter School. In addition to the local Fortuna Elementary Schools, FUHSD works closely with six other feeder Elementary School Districts: Bridgeville, Cuddeback, Hydesville, Loleta, Rio Dell, and Scotia. Together, we ensure a smooth and supportive transition for all students as they enter high school.

FUHSD includes three high schools, each designed to meet different student needs:

  • Fortuna High School – A comprehensive high school offering a wide range of academic and extracurricular programs.

  • East High School – A continuation school providing alternative pathways to graduation in a supportive setting.

  • Academy of the Redwoods – A middle-college high school located on the College of the Redwoods campus, where students can earn college credit while completing their high school education.
